    Environmental Montoring
  • Environmental Control in an Insect Breeding Facility
In the mid 1980's while negotiating a joint venture with English insect breeders, one breeder realized the great untapped potential of the U.S. pet market. Believing the industry was ready for change, he began the process of redefining his business. By combining his passion for success with a retailer's eye, he conceived the next great innovation for insect eating pets: pre-packaged live crickets. With this idea, Bugco was born.
  • Man and Water in Amicable Symbiosis
The cornerstone of safekeeping our living environment lies in the proper preservation of our water resources. With high-tech know-how and the wide-ranging capabilities to back it up, Advantech has been flexing its professional muscle and is being very proactive in various environmental protection monitoring solutions, such as watching over rivers, embankments, dams, and water treatment plants.
  • Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems
Environmental protection is one of the important current topics in the industrial community. In 2007 China established the Polluting Prevention Regulation to limit its emissions, control pollution, and raise the standard of pollution monitoring. This regulation mandated that every power and industrial plant must adopt higher standards for pollution monitoring, which directly increased the demand for Advantech's ADAM-5000 Series.

  • Self-Service Book Borrowing and Returning System
Recently libraries have been extending beyond the physical walls of a building, by including material accessible by electronic means. Library 2.0, a term coined in 2005, is the library’s response to the challenge of Google, and an attempt to meet the changing needs and wants of the users, using Web 2.0 technology. Some aspects of Library 2.0 include commenting, tagging, bookmarking, discussions, using social software, plug-ins, and widgets.
  • Greenhouse Temperature & Humidity Control System
Commercial glass greenhouses are high tech production facilities for growing vegetables or flowers, filled with equipment like screening installations, heating, cooling, and lighting. In many cases these systems are automatically controlled by a computer to regulate and maintain proper plant growth. One of our customers aimed to develop a PC-based control system for automatically monitoring the temperature of their greenhouse.
  • Fire Monitoring System in a Steel Factory
Steel mills are industrial plants for turning molten steel into ingots, billets, and plates. These mills are high temperature, high risk environments prone to outbursts of fire. Since the factory area is too large for the workers to monitor at all times, it's very difficult to enforce safety measures in the event of a fire or other accident. These types of accidents can lead to loss of life, production time, revenue and more. The third largest steel mill in the world is in Korea, and they were experiencing a high volume of accidents each year. In order to improve safety, they tried implementing various new systems, to no effect. Therefore, they called in Advantech to help them establish a proper monitoring system to increase safety and improve production.
  • Movie Theater Facility Control
While the quality of home entertainment centers continues to advance, nothing can replace the experience of watching a film in a movie theater. Every week millions of consumers travel to their local theater to watch films, and many cinemas struggle to maintain a clean, comfortable environment with the latest cutting edge technology. One large projector company was looking for a way to increase the amount of projectors they could install in a monthly period, while also reducing the costs of installation.
  • Geological Survey System
The Earth hoards many treasures beneath its unassuming rock and soil. Geological surveys provide an efficient way to analyze and locate natural resources such as oil and gas, which is important for the mining and construction industry. A globally known company wanted to upgrade their Geological Survey System with a robust and highly efficiency platformto deploy on vessels, aircraft and even an unmanned station in desert.
  • Military Ammunition Depot Monitoring System with ADAM-6000 & GCL
A military institute in Taiwan wanted to monitor their ammunition depot against illegal access or break-ins. When the window or door of the ammunition depot is opened, an alarm will be activated and a message will be sent to the server (a computer) in the central control room. While traditionally the job of a PLC, this customer chose to apply the ADAM-6000 series with new GCL functionality, saving them money and allowing more employees to customize the Logic programming software.
  • Copper Foil Production Equipment in a Plastic Molding Facility
This project applies HMI devices to copper foil production equipment, designed for a plastic molding facility in Taiwan. Copper foil production machinery are electrolytic, and their end products are mainly used on Printed Circuit Boards (PCB). Because it is one of the most important procedures in the manufacturing process, peripheral data monitoring and interface controlling devices must be strictly managed to reach the optimum production level. The Advantech WebView-1261H HMI device has been adopted as human machine interface in this project.

White Papers
Summary: There can be too much of a good thing, or so goes the old saying. Fortunately, new technology can come to the rescue, at least in certain cases. For example, an industrial enterprise can grow too big for efficient automation control using traditional technology. However, advances in industrial Ethernet can provide a solution, if such techniques as smart remote I/O and peer-to-peer technology are implemented. The result could be better and more flexible control, along with a change in the way Ethernet is used. This white paper discusses the benefits of Smart I/O and Peer-to-Peer Technology.
